Week 5: Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work Placement Experience
This week, I worked with both the operations and sustainability teams to help align trekking services with the company’s environmental standards. My role involved reviewing trek itineraries and updating them with eco-compliance checklists covering key areas such as plastic-free policies, solar-powered lodging, and ethical labor practices.
I also supported the marketing team by integrating these sustainability features into client brochures, ensuring consistent messaging across departments. This collaboration gave me hands-on experience in working across teams and reinforced the importance of coordination in delivering a responsible tourism product.
Key tasks included:
Updating trek itineraries to include eco-compliance checklists.
Integrating sustainability features such as:
Solar-powered lodges
Zero-plastic trekking policies
Assisting in revising marketing brochures to reflect updated eco-practices.
Challenges faced:
Navigating differing priorities between the operations and marketing teams regarding timeline, formatting, and messaging.
Contribution to the Organization
Co-authored a refreshed brochure format emphasizing sustainability metrics.
Resulted in:
A 40% reduction in client queries related to eco-features.
Improved clarity for sales representatives when explaining service benefits.
Strengthened Trekking Team’s positioning as a green tourism brand.
Outcome:
Streamlined internal communication and contributed to a unified brand narrative grounded in sustainability.
Learning & Application of Theory
Applied Tuckman’s Team Development Model to understand group dynamics across departments:
Recognized the stages of forming, norming, and performing during collaboration.
Identified with Belbin’s “Implementer” team role, contributing structure, reliability, and follow-through.
Reinforced MBA learning about cross-functional coordination in project-based environments.
Critical Analysis & Evaluation
Strengths:
Brought organization and clarity to document integration.
Maintained open communication to ensure team alignment.
Areas for improvement:
Initially struggled to mediate between conflicting departmental priorities.
Gained experience in compromise and prioritizing shared objectives.
Reflection:
This week improved my ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams. I developed negotiation and facilitation skills and gained a deeper appreciation for the operational complexity behind seemingly simple marketing outputs.
